Welcome to WA Gay & Lesbian Bowling League
Long ago, back in 1986, I was living in Wembley with my first boyfriend and working as a short-order cook at the Red Lion Hotel. My dad lived south of the river and we arranged to meet every Sunday at Fairlanes City for a few games. My boss, a keen bowler, started coming along, then some of my friends and some of his... pretty soon it had turned into a regular event.
In 1990, we decided to take the plunge and officially register our group as the WA Gay League, launching our first season on 4 February with five teams. WAGL has grown from strength to strength over the years and is now one of the largest tenpin bowling leagues in the city.
In 1994, we were proudly represented by ten WAGL members at Gay Games IV in New York City, winning a bronze medal in the teams event. In 1998, four of our members participated in Gay Games V in Amsterdam, bringing home a silver medal in the men's singles event.
In the Sydney 2002 Gay Games, Gold and Bronze medal's rained down for the woman's singles and teams. Fundraising is now well underway for the next Gay Games - Chicago - 2006. Who knows... maybe you'll be part of our team!
